The Origins of Cadillac
Cadillac was founded by Henry Leland in 1902, and the brand was named after the founder of Detroit, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. The innovation that Cadillac added to the conversation was the idea of interchangeable parts for the automotive industry, streamlining and enhancing car production forever. For this innovation, the brand adopted the slogan “Standard of the World.”
The first vehicle was the Cadillac Runabout, introduced in 1903, a two-seat vehicle with a 10-hp single-cylinder engine. Cadillac is currently owned by and under the umbrella of General Motors (GM), but they are not from the same manufacturer.
The Origins of the Cadillac Logo
The iconic Cadillac logo did not look like that at first and has gone through 30 different iterations over the past 100 years. The original Cadillac logo started with crisp lines and sleek engines to correspond with the original “art and science” theme. Here are some other notable Cadillac logos that have appeared over the years:
- In 1906, the logo includes a coat and a shield. The Shield is meant to represent the family’s origins from the royal courts of Toulouse.
- In 1920, the badge includes a tulip-bulb wreath from the original trademark with nine points on the crown. The logo went down to seven points on the crown.
- In 1933, the crest was given wing and was made detachable.
- In 1957, the crest was lengthened and widened. The crown was eventually discontinued in 1959.
